HVAC Maintenance Tips

Spring is approaching, and for the Twin Cities, that means rising temperatures and melting snow. It’s time to switch your thermostat from heating to cooling. As a homeowner, it is critical that you take care of your HVAC system. Proper maintenance will ensure an efficient, smooth operation that provides comfort to you and everyone in your home. Continue reading to learn some helpful HVAC maintenance tips.

Change Your Air Filters

One of the most important tips for your HVAC is to make sure that you regularly change your air filters. Air filters trap dirt, pollen, pet dander, and other pollutants. Dirty air filters can block airflow and cause your system to work twice as hard, leading to a decrease in efficiency and increase in utility bills. In extreme cases, a clogged air filter could become a fire hazard. Check your filter for dirt and debris monthly and change it if necessary; at minimum, change the filter every three months.

Keep the Area around Your System Clean

The area around your HVAC system should be free from debris, clothes, cleaning supplies, or other objects. It is critical that the area is clear to allow proper airflow around the unit and prevent overheating as well as damage to nearby items. In addition, keep the air vents around your home clear. Do not block the vents with furniture, rugs, plants, or other objects. Covered vents will restrict airflow, causing the system to work harder, which increases energy costs. Maintain your outdoor air conditioning condenser by removing any dirt, leaves, or other debris.

Schedule Maintenance Checks

Your HVAC system needs a regular maintenance check twice a year, before both the heating and cooling seasons This will help your system run smoothly and efficiently year-round. During an inspection, most HVAC technicians will:

  • Clean or replace filters
  • Check the refrigerant level
  • Listen for unusual noises
  • Check the thermostat
  • Lubricate moving parts
  • Inspect the condenser
  • Inspect the coils
