Home Electrical and HVAC Tips for the Holidays

Home Electrical and HVAC Tips for the Holidays

Christmas is less than two weeks away, and the new year just one week after that. Are you prepared? If you’re hosting this year, the extra people will place more stress on your heating and electrical systems. Use these home electrical and HVAC tips to help ensure a safe and happy holiday season.

HVAC Prep and Safety

Certain home heating mistakes can increase winter utility bills, and the stress of the holidays can cause an even bigger spike. Follow these tips to manage cost and comfort during your party:

  • Change the Air Filter: A fresh filter keeps your indoor air clean and your furnace running efficiently.
  • Lock Windows and Keep Doors Shut (when possible): Ensure a tight seal by locking windows. Set up spaces for eating, sitting, socializing, and other activities indoors. Constantly opening the door to get in or out lets warm air escape and forces your furnace to work harder.
  • Lower the Thermostat: The more people in the home, the warmer it gets and the less your furnace needs to work. Cooking will add even more heat, so either prepare as much ahead of time as possible or plan to turn the thermostat down a few extra degrees for the party.

Electrical/Lighting Prep and Safety

Residential fires are most common in the winter, and all the holiday decorations and distractions play a big factor. Beware of these often-overlooked electrical mistakes and keep your home safe this season.

  • Set up String Lights Safely: Connect no more than three strands to avoid blowing a fuse or causing an electrical fire.
  • Inspect Electrical Decorations: Be sure there are no cracked or damaged sockets, loose or bare wires, or loose connections. Also, look for a certification label stating that the product has been tested for safety by an independent laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), or Intertek (ETL).
  • Be Careful with Cords: They shouldn’t be pinched by furniture, placed under rugs or near heat sources, attached by nails or staples, or forced into small spaces like doors or windows.
  • Don’t Overload Outlets: Decorations can bring holiday spirit to your home but avoid overloading your outlets. Be sure only one high-wattage appliance is plugged into each outlet at a time.

It may be cold out, but it’s also a time for joy and celebrating with family. Remember to follow these tips to help ensure a safe and happy holiday season!
